Introduction

The Global Scientific Information and Computing Center(GSIC) at the Tokyo Institute of Technology was established on April 1st, 2001 as a new information center for the 21st century. GSIC was formed by amalgamating the Computer Center and the International Cooperation Center for Science and Technology of the university.

Great things are expected of this center. Its mandate will be to support research and education by making the most of leading edge information technologies. It will also promote an active and cooperative exchange of research and education among various organizations such as universities, research laboratories and other institutes, both inside and outside of Japan.

Due to the rapid growth in information technology in recent years and the associated benefits it has brought, GSIC will have to continually strive to provide helpful support for high-level research and education at the university. Furthermore, the research and development activities of GSIC and the optimal usage of the latest information technologies need to meet the requirements of users of this center. To meet this goal, GSIC employs a total of 12 full-time and visiting professors at two information divisions comprised of four groups dedicated to the cooperative advancement of research and development.

A major characteristic of GSIC lies in the global scientific cooperation division, yet another division, comprised of two groups: one for advancing the international cooperative research and education, and the other for promoting the international joint research projects. And making the best use of the information infrastructure of the center will certainly drive forward the international cooperation in research and education as well as the international joint research projects.
