GSIC International Symposium on "Slope Stability Assessment, Reinforcement and Monitoring in Open-Pit Coal Mining"

Global Scientific Information and Computing Center, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University has entered into the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in conducting the joint research project “Modeling and Simulation of Large-scale Open-pit Coal Mining” since March 28, 2010. This MOU paves a way to joint research activities and publications as well as joint working arrangement for holding conferences, colloquia and symposia in order to exchange of information for implementing excavation techniques to the Mae-Moh open-pit lignite mine which is owned and operated by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Under an umbrella of MOU going forward, the international symposium is decided to be held at Chiang Mai University on August 16th, 2013.

This symposium aims to promote joint research activities and enhance scientific researches in the fields of geotechnical engineering, geological engineering and coal mining under the themes focusing on “Stability” and “Reinforcement” and “Monitoring”. Eight research topics contributed by Tokyo Institute of Technology, Chuo University, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Chiang Mai University, Kasetsart University and Chulalongkorn University on physical models, theoretical idealization, numerical analyses, measurement techniques, field monitoring and actual practice will be presented.

This time, it is much honored to be able to have Prof. Hideki Ohta from Chuo University as the guest speaker, devoted to the topic “Engineering Practice of Vacuum Consolidation with Prefabricated Vertical Drain”, in the morning session of the symposium.
